Presidential election

The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy TD, has signed the order for the presidential election, which will take place on Friday 26 October 2018.

All Irish citizens, who will be 18 on or before the 26th of October, may vote in the presidential election. Make sure you are registered to vote.

If you are not registered to vote, the deadline to register is Friday the 5th of October 2018.

The last (and thirteenth) presidential election took place on Thursday the 27th of October 2011. There were seven candidates and Michael D. Higgins was elected Uachtarán na hÉireann. After eliminations and transfers, his final total was over 1 million votes (on Count 4), which was the first time any candidate in an Irish election had received so many votes (In the Dún Laoghaire constituency, Mr Higgins received 52.4% of the first-preference vote).
