Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council regularly monitor the water quality along the coast. Following receipt of the results of samples taken on Monday the 18th of August 2014, the Council has taken the precautionary steps of placing a temporary prohibition notice, advising against swimming at Blackrock Baths Shore. The results for showed a high level of E. Coli and Enterococci.

E. Coli (Escherichia coli) is a faecal coliform and indicator organism because it occurs in the intestinal flora of both animals and humans. Contamination allows the organism to spread to water environments where its presence indicates faecal contamination.

Enterococci are widely distributed in the environment and are normal commensals of the intestinal tracts of animals, birds and humans. its presence is indictive of faecal contamination.

The cause of these high levels is not known and an investigation has commenced. The water at both locations has been resampled and the results are expected back on Friday the 22nd of August 2014. If the re-sample results are acceptable the temporary prohibition notice will be removed.
