Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has just announced its Autumn/Winter 2010 Environmental Awareness Programme, with something on for children of all ages.

To start things off, this week the team is hosting a series of eco-conferences for secondary school students in County Hall, Dún Laoghaire, where students will have an opportunity to question a panel of experts on environmental issues, before participating in a series of environmental workshops.

Panellists include Sandy McGroarty of ECO-UNESCO, Tara Clarke of Young Friends of the Earth, and Gavin Harte of ESD (Education for Sustainable Development). The conference co-ordinator, (Dean Eaton of DLRCoCo), will also deliver a short presentation on the possible effects of climate change.

Other upcoming awareness events include the launch of a new water education pack for primary schools, which includes a host of science experiments, fact sheets and puzzles. The CD that comes with the pack will be sent to all primary schools in November, and the team will also visit a number of schools in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown to promote the programme.

Come December, the popular “Re-cycled Christmas Decoration Competition” will also be running and local students will have the chance to ‘green’ their holiday season by creating decorations out of recycled materials!

Keep an eye on the Council’s website (click here) for more information on these and new additions to the awareness programme.
