model-railway-exhibition-225x300The Model Railway Society of Ireland in association with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is proud to host a Model Railway & Hobbies Exhibition at County Hall, Marine Road, Dún Laoghaire. The Exhibition will be open 12-5pm on Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th August 2011 – admission costs €5 (adults) and €2 (children); children are free if accompanied by an adult.

The following layouts and models will put on display by the Model Railway Society of Ireland (MRSI) and its members:

O’Connell Street – depicting the GPO side of O’Connell Street circa 1940, from Westmorland Street to Parnell Street, with trams and busses, the GPO, and Nelson’s Pillar. The layout comprises hand-build buildings and measures over 11m (36”). It will have operational trams, trucks and busses, with plenty of detail.

Bad Dürkheim – based on continental Europe (Bad Dürkhrim is a spa town near Mannheim in south-west Germany), this layout has an upper track meandering through snow-covered mountains and a large multi platform station; and lower lines rushing through the countryside this. At 5.8m x 3.6m (19′x12′) this is one of the Society’s biggest layouts.

Loughrea – featuring Loughrea station, Co. Galway, circa 1960 (Ireland’s last operational rural branch line), this layout is over 8.5m (27′) long. It includes highly detailed hand-built buildings and scenery by the members of the Model Railway Society. Having outlasted most other country railway lines of this type by 10 to 20 years, Loughrea survived long enough to have diesel motive power. The line was opened in December 1890, was finally closed in November 1975, and subsequently lifted in 1988, following a failed preservation attempt on the line.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Hall – a very detailed scale model (1:76) of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Hall, built by Noel Dodd with exceptionally fine interior detail.

Farndale – an end station with turntable and cattle dock, build by Kevin Thornberry, a founder member of the Model Railway Society.

LEGO – a fine display of Lego trains (in Irish liveries) by James Shields.
