The Minister for Justice & Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, has announced that the level of Garda recruitment will be increased, with a further 250 new recruits in 2015, in two batches of 125, promising on-going strong Garda recruitment.
This will mean that 550 new recruits will have entered the Garda College at Templemore in the year from September 2014, the first new Gardaí to be recruited since 2009.
This is in addition to the €27.5 million invested in new Garda vehicles between 2012 and 2014, marking a massive increase on the €4.8 million provided for in Budgets 2009-2011. The latest 370 new Garda vehicles have come on stream since the start of this year.
It is hoped that this increased investment, across-the-board, will underpin the new Transformation Programme and Anti-Crime Strategy that are currently being finalised by Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan.
