When I was elected to the Seanad on 2 April, I immediately and automatically vacated my seat on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council as a Councillor for Blackrock, a post I had held since May 2009.

The Local Government Act 2001 provides for the members of Fine Gael in Blackrock to replace me in that regard and there was a hotly contested convention in June to fill that vacancy.

Well done to al who put their names forward and I’m really delighted that Maurice Dockrell, who was my running mate in the 2014 Local Elections, came through.

Maurice is a really strong voice for Blackrock, he is from Booterstown and has a long family history in the area both in terms of residents and politicians; his great-grandmother having served as a member of Blackrock Urban District in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and he is the fifth generation of his family to hold public office.
