Amsterdam-Cycling–750×497

I spent a really informative few days in The Netherlands last week, exploring the extensive cycling infrastructure there, thanks to IrishCycle.com.

There was a large group from Dublin, including councillors and local authority officials.

I like to think that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council works hard on facilities for cyclists, although I acknowledge we have plenty of work to do, particularly in progressing projects like the S2S (Sutton 2 Sandycove).

However, what is clear from what we saw in cities like Utrecht, Nijmegen, Amsterdam and Eindhoven, is that we are very far behind in this country in terms of the provision of an environment that actually encourages people to choose the bicycle over the car.
Cycling makes for safer, quieter, healthier streets; it behoves is to put in place infrastructure that facilitates cycling, as much as possible.

Thanks to Cian Ginty for all his hard work in organising the trip and the many experts we met, and presentations we had.
