At the general election selection convention in the Stillorgan Park Hotel this evening, Fine Gael Head Office directed the Dún Laoghaire constituency to select two candidates – one man and one woman. When the votes were counted, Sean Barrett came first, I was next and Mary Mitchell-O’Connor was third. In accordance with the directive, Sean Barrett and Mary Mitchell-O’Connor will now contest the election for Fine Gael in Dún Laoghaire.
I was tremendously gratified by the huge level of support I received and by the number of people who supported me. I want to put on record my sincere gratitude to all Fine Gael members who attended the convention this evening, and particularly all those who supported me and voted for me. I am obviously disappointed that the party directive meant I could not be selected tonight, but I wish Sean and Mary all good luck in the coming general election and will be working hard to ensure we take two seats in Dún Laoghaire.
